Extension to an existing manufacturing facility, which includes a basement construction and suspended ground floor supporting high design imposed loads. Careful consideration was needed in dealing with particularly difficult ground conditions; asbestos containing made ground with, a water table close to surface level, overlying sands and gravels and then clay over mudstone, which held ground water under artesian pressure. The basement was constructed as a reinforced concrete deep raft within the confines of a sheet piled perimeter. The piles were carefully driven to form a seal with the clay and the area dewatered prior to excavation. The extension was constructed whilst the existing facility maintained full production.
