Repairs to external concrete elements 2013 of the Mark II Telescope.
Detailed inspection and investigation was carried out to the distinctive concrete support frame and the concrete buildings forming the base of this historic structure.
The Mark II is a steerable, elliptical, radio telescope, which was commissioned by Sir Bernard Lovell and completed in 1964, some years after the successful introduction of the more famous Mark I, or Lovell, telescope.
The concrete support structure was found to be in need of repair, due to the effects of nearly fifty years of exposure to the elements. A detailed inspection and investigation was carried out, together with in-situ and laboratory testing, leading to the preparation of a repair and refurbishment scheme.
The works, which involved cleaning, concrete repair and the application of a protective coating, were completed in late 2013.
